Review of Date Night (2010) by Jen M — 22 Oct 2011
This is a paycheck movie. None of the actors are trying very hard, and the script is so lazy it seems it must have had large areas in it that just read "insert star power here". This is a shame, because the star power the film attracted is impressive, and a movie starring the talented Tine Fey and Steve Carell deserves more laughs and a better structure than this.
It isn't that there isn't a story somewhere amidst this crap; the movie starts out sweet and promising, but the premise- a married couple get themselves in trouble by trying to spice up their love life- never goes anywhere.
These characters don't grow, and after awhile it's hard to distinguish where their written personalities end and their SNL instinct improv begins. Appearances by Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig and Mark Ruffalo are burn out as quickly as wasted matches.
