Review of Date and Switch (2014) by Bernard L — 31 May 2014
A bromantic sex comedy about graduating seniors and longtime best buds, Michael and Matty, who -- as two virgins! -- make a pact to help the other "score" before their senior prom. Michael (Nicholas Braun - Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Matty (Hunter Cope - April Apocalypse) have a mission ... until Matty secretly confides to his best friend that he is gay and their friendship is heavily tested through some ups and downs. As a film with a simple message of tolerance, it works adequately although it is heavily bogged down with stereotypes and predictable generalizations. Weak direction in general does not help the film as it can be watched but is mostly forgettable. Date and Switch's most noteworthy element is its co-star Dakota Johnson who stars in the upcoming 50 Shades of Gray. She does do a nice job here in her role with an understated performance as Matty's supportive confidante; but it doesn't really matter because the film is so forgettable.
