Rating particularly applies to the long/extended version. Probably the definitive movie involving submarines (also a good war movie). Excellent direction, set design, and cinematography. One can sense the tight quarters (and even the smells of sweat, blood, fuel, and moldy/rotten food) and the crew's moments of boredom (definitely borne out in the extended edition) followed by moments of extreme adrenalin and terror.
Interesting/trivial aside: the boat was also "borrowed" in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and not returned in it's original condition! ;-).
