Wonderful film, I recommend the version with the remastered 5.1 surround soundtrack, which has the best sound of any DVD in existence. That aside, Das Boot is hands down the best submarine movie ever made, and a masterpiece independent of that.
It was originally a miniseries, so the film takes its time to introduce characters and events. I like the characters better with each viewing, especially Prochnow's Captain.
