Review of Das Boot (1981) by Pepé L — 05 Aug 2008
Excellent movie about a WW2 German submarine, its captain and crew as they face the British navy through a realistic lens.Through tight cinematic shots, Peterson captures the essence of living on a submarine: the boredom that follows the waiting of orders, the tension as they head into enemy lines, the claustrophobia and paranoia that ensues diving, and the potential for sheer madness as the crew endures depth charge after depth charge.
Jürgen Prochnow is great in his subtlety, and Peterson even better in his subtle message that in war there are no heroes and victims everywhere.
