Review of Das Boot (1981) by Tomas T — 27 Sep 2008
Das Boot is perhaps the best WWII movie ever created. Forget about romanticed hero war movies, Das Boot gives an extraordinarily realistic presentation of U-Boat warfare during WWII.
Submarine warfare can be summed up as being 95% fight against boredome, crowdness and generall uncomfortablesness, while the rest 5% is filled with intense terror, adrealine and survival in a vechicle best described as an Iron Coffin.
Das Boot is an epic movie, directors cut last over 3 hours but it succesfully keeps the watcher glued to the screen while presenting the multitude sides of submarine warfare. The movie also has a strong anti-war signal in it, but still manages to evade the basic pitfall of discrediting these brave fighting men of the Unterseeboot.
