Review of Das Boot (1981) by Charlotte B — 03 Oct 2008
I saw this first on the BBC when it was shown as a mini-series and thought it was brilliant, the DVD version is far better and gives you the 'cinematic feeling'. As a WW2 submarine film it's without doubt the best for invoking atmosphere and the sheer terror of onboard life.
The actors are excellent and the photography done in the days before CGI does a fantastic job of showing the U-Boat experience. If you can avoid selecting the English audio, I think watching this film in the original German (with subtitles) is how it should be done!!!
