Wolfgang Peterson hit a home run with this submarine film based on a German U-boat during WWII. You follow this crew through some of the worst naval fighting in the Atlantic. You suffer with them as they try to avoid destroyers and depth charges.
It's the satisfaction of seeing them through that makes the ending so painful. Can't give it away, but it will break your heart.
