Review of Das Boot (1981) by Michael R — 20 Dec 2008
The ultimate WW2 submarine movie and an eloquent condemnation of the tragic folly of war, this film evokes the claustrophobia and tension of life on a U-boat during the Battle of the Atlantic. Set in 1941 and based on author Lothar Gunther Buccheim's real-life experiences aboard the real U-96, the film follows the crew's emotional arc from glee at their triumph in battle to horror, to paralyzing fear.
Realistic and gripping. A must-see for the war movie buff.
