Review of Das Boot (1981) by Oliver H — 27 Nov 2010
One of the best War films ever made. Its so realistic and it really makes you feel claustrophobic and feel the horrors of war. At times you do forget its a movie because it doesn't follow the movie formula of keep the action coming and build tension.
Das Boot is one of those films that sounds terrible when described in that its a very long film (3 1/2 hours for directors cut and 4 hours 54 mins for original cut) and it has little action and most of the film is the crew waiting for orders.
However when Peterson lays out the suspense and action he lays in on thick and even though they are of the nazi party its extremely hard to not root for them especially in the last 45 mins which is unforgettable.
No Sub film can compare to the drama, realism, or suspense of Das Boot. Great music, great acting, and great directing makes Das Boot a must see film for anyone who enjoys war films. It ranks #4 on my list of 50 favorite movies.
That's how much I love this film.
