I saw the director's cut on a dvd that only carried the English dubbed version of the film (the dubbing was very good in my opinion). The film felt very claustrophobic, following a German U-boat crew in WWII, and was very effective in the way it showed them as ordinary human beings fighting in a war over which they had no control.
