Review of Das Boot (1981) by Zanele J — 30 Dec 2012

Das Boot looks at the then glorified role of being a fighter in a submarine. Once exercise drills are carried out in open waters then the soldiers realise what a pickle being in a vulnerable, confined submarine is.
The movie is bookended by mayhem, in the start it's a crazy party, toasts, initiation ceremonies called fire drills, in the end, a surprise attack from an enemy and death. In the heart of the movie we go through the rigorous effort of surviving an attack in open waters, this is very hard to do under a great deal of uncertainty, damaged vessel, spooked soldiers with morale in the doldrums.
This movie is entertaining, and is food for thought.
Highly recommended.
