Review of Das Boot (1981) by Kilo D — 26 Jul 2010
Das Boot looks like it is going to be a dull film, and I have been put off it for a long time, but now I've seen it my jaw is on the floor. It's hard to believe this is based on a true story as it's so shocking.
Das Boot is also very realistic, the submarine looks like a real boat and every detail looks perfect, if your claustrophobic be warned, as this is not a fun film to watch. The DVD does have a dubbed soundtrack, but I put it on the original German version as the dubbed version sounds awful.
This is a long film and although it's all one set, I did not get bored and was gripped throughout, the final climax is heartbreaking even if the guys are German, you still route for them, as this is more a film about human effort rather than taking sides on who you want to win.
