Review of Das Boot (1981) by Jc E — 16 May 2011
This really wasn't on my Netflix radar, but it was a fairly pleasant surprise. I'll admit that I had to switch it over to the dubbed English, but it didn't really lose any of the impact. Director Wolfgang Petersen was smart to not try making a film about Germans where they speak English, but it got a little hard to follow after a while.
However, the central story is solid. Though it might be a little odd to have Germans as protagonists in a World War II film, it never really makes you feel like you're rooting for the Nazis. And, for a movie made thirty years ago, this had some surprisingly good effects.
If you're a fan of war movies, this is probably one to be watched. However, if you're extremely claustrophobic, you might want to avoid it. After all, the majority of the film takes place on a German U-boat.
