Review of Das Boot (1981) by Jon M — 20 Jun 2012
One of the greatest psychological studies ever made, Das Boot pulls you into the minds of people struggling to stay alive & sane in ways no film has ever done. Following a German submarine crew on their tour of duty near the end of WWII, knowing their side is losing & yet doing their duty as their leaders begin to retreat.
The 3.5 hour director's cut builds tension masterfully by creating empathy with the crew as sailors, not soldiers. Brilliantly executed, flawlessly performed, riveting from start to finish - Das Boot works on multiple levels & never falls into the trap of typical war movie cliches.
Unique, powerful & resonant. Highly recommended.
