Review of Darkon (2006) by Nate A — 11 Jul 2009
What could have been a fascinating look at a unique subculture is, unfortunately, a pretty disappointing and shallow documentary. I would have liked to have learned a bit more about how the game is played. Instead, we're given the same story over and over again: people who are unhappy or awkward in real life are given the confidence and freedom to create and act however they choose in the game, which sometimes can spill over to the real world.
The ongoing arc of the conflict between the faux nations was dull. The filmmakers portray their subjects without a sense of irony, but I get the feeling that most people watching this will simply laugh at and not sympathize with the people portrayed.
