Review of Darkman (1990) by Paul N — 14 Jan 2009
Nutbag superhero opus from Sam Raimi, made between EVIL DEADs 2 & 3, back when he still had the low budget and freedom to BE a total nutbag. As to be expected with early Raimi, wacky black humour rubs shoulders with overwrought melodrama, all punctuated by some rather impressive action set pieces.
Don't pause to think about the logic -- that money's no good here -- instead just sit back and enjoy such decorated thespians as Liam Neeson, Frances McDormand and Colin Friels (!) camping it up, and Raimi's sheer directorial exuberance in bringing his berserk Marvel Comics-meets-Universal Horror vision to the screen.
