Review of Darkman (1990) by Brett A — 19 Jun 2010
I believe this was my first taste of Sam Raimi's madness pie, and when I saw it, I loved it. I still think of Liam Neeson as Darkman first, and his other roles a distant second. It's surreal, comicbookishly goofy, dark, funny, violent, and everything my teenage self was looking for in a movie.
Watching it again, I'm reminded of how much I used to love Sam Raimi, and how, like Tim Burton, he became a shadow of his former self over the last decade or so. Apparently, this was the movie he made when he couldn't get the rights to make The Shadow, and you can see a touch of that retro-comic strip/pulp adventure vibe in it.
Worth checking out for fans of off the wall superhero films.
