Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by James R — 26 Dec 2017
A fantastic performance from Gary Oldman who just nails Winston Churchill. The film is about the first month that Churchill becomes Prime Minister of Great Britain after the resignation of Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup).
The film is a slow burn, but its well paced with the story mostly about Churchill trying to unite the two parties in order to get support for plans to fight against the Nazi's. Of course it's a a bit "Hollywoodized" in a way, but the portrayal here rings true for what I know about Churchill with Oldman nailing his mean spirits at times, his good spirits at times, his obnoxious smoking, his constant mumbling moments.
I really felt like Oldman dived deep into this one. Overall, it's a solid film about hope and never surrendering in the most darkest of times.
