Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by David O — 22 Jan 2018
Gary Oldman shines in this early look into the man that helped Britain through the war. On the heels of Nolan's Dunkirk, Darkest Hour goes in the complete other direction of what happened behind the scenes as this war time struggle went on.
Effectively showcasing Churchill's rise to power, along with his strengths and flaws, Darkest Hour doesn't attempt to glorify the ex Prime Minister but does make him a somewhat endearing character.
The performances are strong and enjoyable, despite what sometimes seems to be a contest to out do the others speech impediment, but ultimately it sticks to its title with its dark moody atmospheres leading to a patriotic and for filling end as Oldman gives his powerful Churchill speech.
