Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by Lefebvre J — 19 Jan 2018
An impressive tour-de-force by Gary Oldman upon whose shoulders the entire film rests. Oldman's Churchill is more blustery than the original, and just as wickedly witty, exposing the dark side of the great man.
This episode of the war is not well known by most; the film tells of the temptation of the Allies to give in to Herr Hitler at his most vicious. We could have done without the subway ride episode; the real Churchill probably decided on his own to motivate his compatriots to stand up and fight, and didn't need this "vox populi" moment to deliver his "we shall fight" speech (so beautifully rendered, here).
Kudos also to Christin Scott Thomas for a strong performance as Clementine Churchill.
