Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by Waltertsolley — 06 Jan 2018
“Darkest Hour” is far from perfect, and that is primarily the fault of director Joe Wright, who has momentary lapses of taste that, were it not for a fine screenplay and incomparable performances, would have ruined this film.
What we have instead—thanks to a brilliant lead performance, by a perfectly unrecognizable Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, equally fine supporting performances, and an engrossing screenplay written with Churchill’s own words—is history come to life.
If not in unimpeachable detail, certainly and unequivocally in spirit. The remarkable core of this movie is performance and words, and ultimately that is all the audience will care about. Inspiring and moving as filmed historical record, without artistic vision as cinema.
