Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by Damien H — 18 Feb 2018
I did enjoy this movie, the time period and person being an interest, but can't see how everyone is going completely gaga over Oldman. I like him as an actor, and he's a good one, but I could often clearly see him under the makeup & while the accent was generally good, sometimes it made me wince - and his cadence and tone of Churchill's voice sounded off, but I must admit I've only heard recordings of him making formal speeches and few of us talk in that mode all the time.
It all became clear when reading that his Churchill was more "creation" rather than "impersonation", I'd wish I'd read that prior to seeing the movie - it really compromised how much I enjoyed it until the fictitious train scene, when I came to peace with the fact I was watching a representation rather than history.
