Review of Dark Water (2005) by Kyle L — 19 Jan 2013
Dark Water is one of the most impressive Horror remakes based on the original Japanese movie of the same name and it is one of the better Japanese remakes since The Ring. The plot of this film is about a young woman name Dahlia Williams who has a traumatized past and is divorced from her husband and has to share custody with her husband on spending time with her daughter.
Dahlia starts a new life in Roosevelt Island where she finds a good school and an apartment but soon Dahlia learns that she and her daughter Ceci are the target of the ghost who used to live in that apartment they're staying and Dahlia must solve the clues about the little girl and her family who use to live there as her daughter starts to befriend Natasha who is the girl who lives in that apartment.
I seriously enjoy watching this film and it is my second time to watch this movie. I watched this first back in 2005 and I remember I was 7 years old back in my elementary years this was one of the first Horror films that I've watched next to The Grudge remake and The Ring remake and other Horror films as well.
Now watching it for the second time still feels the same and this movie still creeped me out and the whole movie is just plain creepy and really worth a watch. To be honest I never saw the original Dark Water which was directed by Ringu director Hideo Nakata although I'm really interested to watch that one as well.
For the most part Dark Water is a different kind of Horror film. For me normally this movie doesn't feel like a Horror movie at all and it is more of a Drama Psychological Thriller mixed with Horror elements instead of a Horror movie because the film's genre is used in different ways during the pacing of the film.
I seriously enjoyed this movie and I know there's little doubt about this movie from most critics I know that some people like it and some people hate it and prefer the original Japanese movie by Hideo Nakata.
For me that didn't make sense I mean I love this movie a lot and I didn't get bored with this movie at all since I watched it for the second time and this movie completely interest me. For the most part the pacing of this movie is slow but I think it was great enough for the movie to be slow because this movie is not a Horror film and it is more of a Drama Thriller mixed with Horror elements and it does manage to achieve the best moments in movie history.
What's great about Dark Water is that the film has a lot of atmosphere and the film's atmosphere creates a reallye lighting in certain parts of the film like the shots of Dahlia walking in room 10F is super unsettling and creepy as well and it keeps you interested from watching the movie.
While the atmosphere in Dark Water is well used I also enjoy a couple of creepy and scary moments. The dream sequences of Dahlia seeing her mother in room 10F is one of the scariest moments of the film and the bathroom scene where Ceci is stalked by the ghost of Natasha is one of the scariest moments in Horror movie history and other than that there are also more creepy moments that can interest you like the scene where Dahlia is about to get water to swallow her pill and when she tries to get water from the sink and a strain of hair shows up in the water is one of the creepiest moments in the film and the ending climax of Dark Water is so intense and super thrilling and scary as well and I did like the ending climax of the movie so far and I had fun watching the film's suspense so far.
Normally this is a different kind of Horror film unlike most Horror movies that focus more on gore and extreme brutality Dark Water is more of your ordinary Horror film that plays differently not only as a Drama Psychological Thriller mixed with more Horror elements but it also plays more as a Dark Ghost flick other than a Drama Psychological Thriller mixed with Horror elements.
I seriously enjoy watching this film and the idea of mixing the genre in the pacing is so different and really good enough to impress the audience so far. Now the acting is great the performances of Jennifer Connelly and the other casts members did a good job with they're roles in the film and they performed really well in the movie.
As for Jennifer Connelly I was so amazed with her role in the film and she's so beautiful and gorgeous as well and she not only portrays the character of Dahlia Williams really well but she also carries a really beautiful and gorgeous looks and she looks so gorgeous ever since I saw her role in Dario Argento's Phenomena and I really admire Jennifer Connelly a lot with both her performance and her beauty that she has in her and I did enjoy watching Jennifer Connelly act in this movie so far as much as I enjoyed watching her beauty and acting in Dario Argento's 1985 Horror film Phenomena.
Director Walter Salles and Writer Rafael Yglesias did a good job in making a good Drama Psychological Thriller mixed with Horror elements and they both did a wonderful job with their work in the movie so far and I'm hoping to see more works from Director Walter Salles and Writer Rafael Yglesias in the future.
Overall Dark Water gets a 10/10 because this movie has a completely different feel and it is not a Horror film at all and more of a Drama Psychological Thriller mixed with Horror Elements plus Jennifer Connelly's performance in the movie makes it even better and she also brings the film to life with her stunning performance that can interest any audience.
