It suffers from budgetary restraints and being somewhat generic, and it doesn't have enough innovation to overcome these flaws. The being said, Dark Was The Night is a surprisingly good horror movie.

Kevin Durand shows more star power than most of his previous roles combined, and the supporting cast is good as well. The plot is nice and tight, and the unconventional final act makes it well worth a watch.

Unlike most horror movies, the tension isn't completely reliant on built-up suspense. This is a film that wants you to feel the characters' pain, and succeeds in doing so. The directing could be better, but the cinematography is surprisingly artistic, and the use of blue tinting in some scenes successfully brings out raw emotion.
