Review of Dark Victory (1939) by Alia P — 22 Dec 2007
Who loves George Brent? I do! Who thinks Bette Davis did a great job? I do! Who thinks Humphrey Bogart's Irish accent was terrible? I do!
I haven't really seen any Bette Davis films before, but I'm learning to like them -- this movie is definitiely a bit melodramatic - but I think it still is a worthy film. It's an interesting concept (do you tell someone they're going to die if they are led to believe otherwise? Is it ethically right to keep the truth from them? If they manage to uncover their negative prognosis, how does one deal with their impending doom?). There were flashes of humor (Do you use your eyes? I try to keep them open during the day...) -- and plenty of emotional moments. A movie worth seeing at least once, I think.
