Review of Dark Skies (2013) by Simon G — 25 May 2013
Taking the likes of Paranormal Activity and The Fourth Kind as a foundation Dark Skies follows a family terrorised by supernatural like events (nocturnal kitchen based balancing acts, freak bird deaths etc) which intensify over a number of weeks. Director Scott Stewart has improved on his last two offerings Legion (pretty good) and Priest (woeful) maintaining a consistent atmosphere and delivering at least one genuine jump-out-of-your-seat scare.
Elements of Poltergeist II and 1408 are thrown into the finale which leaves more questions than answers although the film could have done without so much exposition from J.K. Simmons' abduction expert to leave a little more ambiguity but on the whole Dark Skies is a creepy and enjoyable ride which nicely straddles the line between standard Hollywood haunted house fare and a more probing look into the insidious (no pun intended) scheme of The Grays.
