Review of Dark Skies (2013) by Jay B — 28 May 2013
'Dark Skies' is a quaint, confined, little tale about a typical suburban family dealing with the terrors of being "visited." It plays out much like every paranormal picture of the last few decades.
.. that is to say, you won't find anything you haven't experienced before. Although, it's nice to see a project that allows me to take Keri Russell seriously for a change and the man who played her hubby was quite convincing as well.
The child stars, however, need some work. I was not a fan of either of their cardboard performances. As I said, all the usual scary movie beats are touched upon, but eerily well done in this case. We see just enough of our creatures here too.
.. lurking in the shadows perfectly. As for the ending... seems like the filmmakers think the so called "twist" matters more than it really does... the educated viewer will spot it a mile away.
Over all, I liked it... if just for its subtle build up and satisfying enough final act..
