Review of Dark Skies (2013) by Richard R — 06 Aug 2013
From the original trailer I was hoping for a much better movie than we actually got. With the likes of The Fourth Kind behind us, a truly effective and terrifying thriller mixing both "real footage" and conventional film-making, which also posed serious questions about the existence and purpose behind extra-terrestrial visitation; Dark Skies seemed to be moving horror away from ghosts and exorcisms (which seem to be horror staples these days more than ever).
But unfortunately it turns into a rather lackluster attempt to scare people with "it's behind you" tactics and everything being about an unlikeable kid. To be honest, the scares weren't even that scary either, there may have been a jump or two and the weird faces being constantly pulled were a little unsettling, but nowhere near the level it should have been at.
Disappointing (but still better than half the horror movies out there).
