Review of Dark Shadows (2012) by Kevin O — 26 May 2013
This movie shouldn't have failed with that much talent, yet it did. I can't blame the actors because none were bad or mailed in their performances. Michelle Pfeiffer was actually pretty good. Jackie Earl Haley and Chloe Moretz were totally wasted after becoming two of my favorite actors to watch of late.
This failure falls at the feet of Tim Burton. The movie couldn't decide if it was a comedy or a drama. It is possible to blend both but this was just a mess. After being a long time fan of Tim Burtons films, he has finally made a film that I can not defend. It's time that people stop kissing his ass everytime he releases a new remake and make him earn the praise again because other than Sweeney Todd and Big Fish, it has been awhile since he has done anything worth a damn.
Unfortunately things dont appear to be getting any betterwith his next film being an animated remake of his original live action film "Frankenweenie". I have as much interest in seeing that as I am the next Adam Sandler movie......none.
The two stars are for the actors and a positive start too the film. Unfortunately soon as the back story is told, the film totally derails. Good cameos by Christopher Lee and Alice Cooper briefly add some spark to the film but it doesn't last. Go find the original series on television or disc and try to ignore this mess.
