Review of Dark Shadows (2012) by Ronald F — 14 Jun 2013
Having grown up in the late '60's, the original soap opera was one of those shows that I very rarely missed. Seems like everyone that talks about the show warmly, remembers running home from school to catch the latest installment of Barnabas Collins and clan.
I was no exception. When I heard Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were heading up a movie version, I wasn't sure what to expect. Then I saw the trailer and was shocked that instead of a serious take on the show, they were gearing it towards campy humor.
After hearing negative reviews from friends, I was sure I wasn't going to like this. Finally had an opportunity to see it, and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it very much. Johnny Depp is over the top as Barnabas Collins, but I find his portrayal entertaining.
The rest of the cast does a fine job in bringing out the quirkiness of the Collins family. Danny Elfman's score is great, and set's the eerie tone of the movie. I say at least give it a try. You might like it.
