Review of Dark Shadows (2012) by James W — 01 Nov 2013
Tim Burton's gothic style and spectacular visual effects work wonderfully together, which creates a mysterious yet entertaining adventure that is Dark Shadows. Although it never succeeds in the horror department, there's plenty of mystery and a lot of suspense, especially when the cliff edge comes on screen.
Johnny Depp is yet again on top form, as are the rest of the cast who you can tell are having a blast, especially Eva Green as the evil and sexy Angelique, who buries Collins alive after breaking her heart centuries ago.
The love scene between the two is funny as they destroy her office and break everything in their path, but best of all is the moment when Collins awakens and finds a large "M", which he believes is a demonic symbol, but it's actually a McDonalds logo.
The humour is very quirky and very blunt at times, a lot of it works, but surprisingly a lot of it doesn't, and it's awkward when the comedy falls flat. Dark Shadows is still a fun movie, the weirdness is what sets it apart, and it's another hit for Burton.
