No, it can't be... Depp plays as lively as he can, and the other actors make their efforts, but the actor doesn't have a real goal to reach. He even dares to cross the path of mediocrity by making the film terribly predictable, and the chit-chat scenes are completely irrelevant.
By the way, the ending is so weird, I can't stop feeling sad for the child. I felt as lonely as he pretended to be when the selfish jerk left him (spoilers, i'd be sorry but you wouldn't care, if you were me).
