'Dark Places' is the ugly stepchild of 'Gone Girl'. This timid, drab drama has no one to care and root for and the stakes are low. There needed to be more urgency and suspense and less mood.
Charlize Theron's performance is the only one to register among a great cast. Unlike 'Gone Girl' this story just lays there and goes nowhere. The screenplay seems to be an outline and is completely shallow.
