Review of Dark Passage (1947) by Martin B — 02 Aug 2011
I do like this slightly odd noir movie featuring the dymamic couple of Bogart and Bacall.
The first half is completely shot from the perspective of the viewpoint of Vincent Parry played by Bogart. Parry doen't have any easy times beeing a fugative going from bad times to worse. Bogart doesn't play his usual stiff tough guy, he's more nervous and sad in a way we're not used to see him.
Bacall is cool and hot as usual.
We get a lot of noir trademarks, running around at night in the city (San Fransisco), fights, death, smoking and drinking and a few nice twists.
Eventhough Vincent isn't the usual cool guy, there is plenty of cool dialogue like this:
Vincent Parry: I'm hiding.
Detective: From what?
Vincent Parry: My wife, my friends, my family, everybody.
Detective: Come on now, it can't be as bad as all that.
Vincent Parry: Well, I tell you what you do. You go up there and spend seven years with my wife, and then if you're still in your right mind, come back down here and tell me about it.
