Review of Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) by Michelle F — 30 Jul 2007
A great haunting tale of revenge to watch each harvest time. It's a classic. A group of small-town bigots execute an innocent child-of-a-man named "Bubba"(Larry Drake) - thinking he hurt a little girl (when actually he saved her from a dog attack).
"Bubba" comes back as a scarecrow and kills the bad men off one by one. Each death is preceded by a Scarecrow sighting; which is where Bubba was hiding inside when he was gunned down. It's freaky and unforgettable.
It's innocence turned into something frightening. The music and direction are effective. This could've easily been done for the cinema. The deaths are mostly implied, and the killer unseen, which probably makes it scarier.
It's great how the little girl remains in communication with "Bubba" throughout. Charles Durning is well cast as the evil leader of the group. I loved the jam shot after one of the men was shredded.
