Review of Dark Mirror (2007) by Emily H — 05 Nov 2009
I always enjoy horror movies that are something different. Like Mirrors, this is about an evil force within them but unlike the other one, this is more of a psychological horror flick. It's an independent production but the effects are top notch, what's more there is no crappy CGI or reliance on blood/gore. Instead there's a high creep factor and 'the crap was that?!' stuff.
Deborah (Lisa Vidal) and her family move into a house with an odd history that is shrouded in mystery. The house is made eerie thanks to the Chinese style glass installed, which creates lighting effects that can cause you to see things that aren't there...or are they? Deborah is a photographer who, while taking shots in the house, snaps one in front of a mirror and the flash seemingly 'echoes' within every mirror in the house. After this, people she knows begin to vanish, all at the behest of a figure clad in black whose face you never see. Why is this happening and who is doing it? I ain't sayin' a thing. Watch it for yourself and be shocked.
The acting seemed a bit forced in places, but especially when characters cursed. It was almost as if the actors were uncomfortable saying the lines, as a result the exclamations came off as unnatural and needless. But this is a minor gripe in my opinion, the story makes up for it in a huge way. One of the coolest things about this movie is that the film makers did it all in their own house which had the Chinese windows when they bought it. The weird effects they created is what gave them the idea for this. Bravo to them on a job well done.
