This film, like others from Solondz, offers a way to covertly identify one's own failings, with a laugh, in the company of others. A useful service, I think! Solondz' combined ruthlessness and tenderness toward his characters reminds me of the best in John Kennedy Toole (A Confederacy of Dunces).
Wonderful casting, btw.
