Review of Dark Horse (2012) by Zach M — 29 Jun 2013
DARK HORSE marks a dramatic return to form for Todd Solondz who has an innate ability to capture contemporary culture as it truly is. Never a pessimist, but certainly not an optimist, Solondz holds up a mirror to the banality and emptiness of the zeitgeist where all is measured by material success or fame, and no one seems to be enjoying anything.
Why do we live the way we do? Who knows? No one even seems to care and there's never a thought in anyone's mind of a changing a thing. There's a bleakness in DARK HORSE that could be devastating but Solondz clearly does not want us to be simply miserable, he wants to change things.
DARK HORSE is particularly fascinating for the way it plays with time, reality and fiction in a way Solondz has never done before. DARK HORSE is worth multiple viewings, and in fact, it may be necessary to keep up the energy to end it all as we know it.
