Review of Dark Girls (2011) by Debra W — 27 Sep 2013
I have always been interested in racism and the modern history behind it. We all know about the history of slaves, at least I hope we have come that far. I am more interested in the modern day racism in the world.
My first film was Crips and Bloods : Made in America. Its more than just about the violence within gangs. Watch it. This film "Dark Girls", is the struggle to overcome racism within their own race.
I have always known there was a problem, from living in NYC, an being exposed to a variety of ethnicities. This film explores the racism within their own culture between dark and light skin. The media continues to divide and conquer and we must be aware of what we read, see and repeat to others.
Educating yourself through documentaries like this and other forms of education will slow the perpetuation of racism for all cultures. At least, that is MY hope. I want to feel better about me, and how I live my life.
I have no time for hatred and negativity.
