Review of Dark Days (2012) by D.j. B — 03 Feb 2009
Perhaps my longest 82 minutes in recent memory, Days has its moments where it's genuinely engrossing but it fails to construct any real narrative or develop any of the characters enough to feel real connection or concern for them.
By the 40 or so minute mark the tide begins to turn a bit and something like a narrative begins to form, and the ending is happy if not entirely satisfying, but it's not enough to save what is better described as an amorphous slew of footage than a film.
Yes, these people have had hard lives and faced many challenges, but that doesn't mean that the director can expect the film to magically communicate this without using any particularly strong or emotionally engaging footage.
