Review of Dark Days (2000) by Ryan T — 31 Aug 2005
Wow. what's great about the dvd is that there's a special feature, "life after the tunnel" where you get to learn what happened to each of the homeless people who appeared in the movie. the movie doesn't analyze homelessness; it gets you to really feel like you know these people, in the way the movie is shot and edited.
I like that it stayed consistent, too - he could have told a very interesting story about amtrak politics, or interactions with the general public, and how they felt about these guys living in the abandoned underground trainyard, but he kept it about the community of homeless. and told it without showing his hand but also without jerryrigging himself out of the action. it wasn't too slick to feel real, in other words.
I do wonder if the strong empathy for the people i'm left with by the end is realistic or not. but that could be evidence of the humanizing skill of the filmmaker. I definitely felt respect for them, which I think was realistic.
like any great movie, it really gives you pause, to think: man, what would it be like to be that person?
