Review of Dark Corners (2006) by Jeannette G — 24 Sep 2008
What has happened to Thora Birch? I first saw her in the sublime American Beauty; two years later she did The Hole and Ghost World and looked every bit a star. Fast forward a few years and her co stars from those two films Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson respectively are two of the biggest stars in the world and she is almost forgotten.
As far as this film Dark Corners goes, it is a decent enough Horror/Thriller. I think Ray Gower the writer/director sees himself as the next David Lynch and has clearly been inspired by Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive.
The plot of the film is open to interpretation and the end does not offer full narrative closure, the comparisons with the master filmmaker Lynch ends there. Its hard to say much about the film without giving the plot away: The story starts with two young woman (both played by Birch) who dream about each others lives against a backdrop of a serial killer.
Are these two women real or is one imagined by the other? Is one world real and the other imagined? Watch the film if you want to find out. Worth seeing if you like Horror but not a film you will remember for years to come.
