Review of Dark City (1998) by Cameron J — 04 Jun 2011

It's "The Matrix" meets "Memento". Of course, those two came out years after this, so I guess it's original. Still, that doesn't mean that it's not without flaws. These flaws include a lack of development, some bad dialogue and some slow spots. Still, it most certainly has its strengths: strong characters, good sound editing and mixing, fine performances, a great twist and a solid final act.

Of course, the most outstanding things in this are the visuals. Effects and production designs range from impressive to awe-inspiring. They are also complemented by the truly stunning cenimatography. Lighting is so vivid and really sets the noirish mood, but still allows for Sci-Fi elements to blend in without getting silly and out-of-place. It really makes this odd world seem believable.

Holy cow, this is an awful review. Well, at least it's better than my older ones. Nevertheless, my bad review just means that "Dark City" isn't that much of an outstanding film. Still, that doesn't mean that it's not an offbeat, visually stimulating and fascinating Sci-Fi noir that makes for a reasonably entertaining watch.
