Review of Dark City (1998) by Tanis M — 18 Jun 2013
Dark City is a film that chooses substance over style. However, the style is perfect for the story, it really gives the film the appropriate atmosphere; each set piece and scene conveys the ominous darkness that keeps these people in despair.
And that perfect atmosphere can be attributed to Proyas' darkly fantastic directing that makes each scene a characterization and riveting. Although, I think the real congratulations go to David S.
Goyer for his deeply philosophical, allegorical, and enchanting screenplay. The dialogue in this film is absolutely marvelous, it is subtle, yet gets to the point, and thoroughly explains the story in a way that the laymen can understand, but also, the scholars can have fun with the vast amount of philosophical ideas displayed in this film.
All in all, there is much to be praised about the directing and script, and much to be critical about the acting, but I believe the directing and screenwriting more than make up for the mediocre performances.
