Review of Dark City (1998) by Greg N — 31 Mar 2010
OMG what could be scary than William Burroughs chasing you all over a city and Kiefer Sutherland right behind him? An army of William Burroughs and Kiefer Sutherland being a mad doctor is what's scarier.
But outside of an army of over-the-top, pretending to be underground literary figures, space aliens, Jennifer Connelly before she got old, Melissa George naked, WILLIAM HURT!!!, and the man who should've been James Bond Rufus Sewell, there's the original plot to The Matrix.
Only The Matrix became lame and wasn't nearly as imaginative as the 1930s art-deco meets space and S&M aliens look this movie goes for. Did I mention Jennifer Connelly is hot in this? Don't get me started on Melissa George either.
And the scenes where the world is litterally changing around them are just tons of fun. I don't even know if they even had to sell anyone on a plot with this movie. They probably just listed off visuals and a studio head said, "You make this pile of awesome right now!!!".
