Review of Dark City (1998) by John D — 19 Oct 2010
Not being noticed at first time "Dark City" soon it became cult following. Now many casual viewers sees this flim as one of the best sci-fi films.
The thing that makes this film exeptional is its cinematography. It looks gorfeous. It is pretty impresive since all actoin takes time at night. And it delivers the look of noir genre. The movie is gorgeous to watch and you'll find yourself could't look away just because of cinematography.
The acting was good. Quircky at times. But this probably was made to match the look of early noir films. And acting works for this film. It merges with mystical and jazzy atmosphere of this film. Although that can not be said about characters. They all feel empty inside.
Story itself was very interesting in the begining but started to lose grip in the end. The ending looked very rushed. Also mysterious of the city doesnt seem to have an explanation. I think it was created to create a feel of dark colors infinity.
Overall this film is good film but it isnt as deep or smart as many people think. It just expreses the noir atmosphere very well. Whether you see this film or not you wont lose much.
