Review of Dark City (1998) by Mike G — 30 Oct 2010
Enough concepts, influences and imagery to make at least two movies. Is it Plato's Cave? Is it Kafka's "The Trial" in Death Fantasyland? Is it "The Matrix" beaten to the punch? Is it "Memento" meets German Expressionism? Is it "Death Cab for Cutie?" What is it? By definition, it's a film noire sci-fi epic, which actually feels small and claustrophobic most of the time.
There's no denying Proyas' penchant for overdoing things and this film is no different, but it's just good enough to elicit a "wow" here and there, and it does tie itself together before it's too late.
One thing seems certain. If you don't care for heady, cerebral sci-fi, you'll be lost and bored at the same time.
