Try to imagine, if you will, a version of the Matrix with a smaller budget, a bitching cinematographer, and an alien race instead of artificial intelligence. Oh, and imagine it blows your thought process in more ways than just one.
Add a heaping portion of noir and you have Dark City: the most impressive mind-fuck of the late nineties. If only Proyas hadn't followed it up with Knowing, we all would have been happier.
