Review of Dark City (1998) by Charlie W — 28 Feb 2011
The movie has so many awesome things about it that it is difficult to complete condemn it, and yet it has so many glaring problems that are equally difficult to look past. Dark City has a moderately interesting plot, that at some point for me stopped being compelling.
The visuals are super cool, blending expressionist sets, with traditional noir, and sci fi very well. however the "tuning", which is a huge part of the films story, looks silly every time. The film didn't seem to be trying to create a reality, but just create a film, which I really like about sci-fi as a genre, but I was drawn out of the film too much by it's flaws for it to ever really encapsulate me.
Notable is the off type performance from Kiefer Sutherland, the best I have seen from him (not saying much, I know..) All in all it is worth the watch, but by the end of the movie, I was glad I only got it on netflix.
